We still find it hard to digest the fact that Edinson Cavani is yet to find a club. The Uruguayan is a free agent after leaving PSG in the summer. Even at 33, he is a top forward and can score a lot of goals. Why is he still without a club?
One thing we can confirm is that he is considering a lot of options before settling for his next club. So it might take time before he decides. His demands aren’t helping either. As far as we know, he will demand a huge chunk of wages and needs to play regularly. He won’t settle for a squad role, and you wouldn’t want a player of Cavani’s caliber and money to be sitting on the bench either.
We have seen Cavani missing a lot of sitters, but his records at the French club speak for themselves. He is PSG’s record goalscorer with 200 goals, followed by the legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic with 156. He claimed six Ligue 1 titles and was the top scorer in the league two times. In Ligue 1 alone, the Uruguayan has scored 138 goals in 200 games. That’s a staggering rate of one goal every 109 minutes. Unbelievable!
Many clubs are looking at him as a prospect in this window, including the likes of Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Juventus, and Leeds United. Where will he end up? Let’s have a brief look.
Edinson Cavani and his Prospects
Manchester United: They can benefit from the signing of Cavani. He is certainly an upgrade on Ighalo (miles better), but can the Red Devils offer him regular playing time? Nope, we don’t think so.
Atletico Madrid: yet another mouthwatering option. Linking up with his fellow countryman Luis Suarez is something Cavani will be interested in, but can Atletico Madrid sell Diego Costa before signing Cavani? If so, the partnership can strike fears for other teams in LaLiga.
Benfica: If the Portuguese club can pay his humungous salary, it will be a wonderful signing for the club. Having wrapped up the singing of Jan Vertongan already, they can give Porto a run for the title this season, if they have the El Matador in their cavalry.
Juventus: As per the latest reports, Cavani has rejected a move to the Old Lady, citing his loyalty to Napoli as the main reason. With Alvaro Morata already wrapped up, Juventus won’t be looking at adding firepower again in this window.
Leeds United: It will be a great challenge to add on to an illustrious career. He will get regular chances. Salary is a stumbling block, but if they can negotiate through that, Cavani will rule the Elland road and even the Premier League.
Where do you think Cavani will end-up?
