When Manchester United made Harry Maguire, the most expensive defender ever, Brendan Rodgers had a responsibility in his hand. Replacing someone of the caliber of Harry Maguire, but in football, it is inevitable. Players move on, and managers have to replace them with some as good as them. They don’t always go well, but for Brendan Rodgers, it was an instant hit. The Turkish beast Caglar Soyuncu was the one he chose to replace the current Manchester United skipper.
The beginning was arduous for the Turkish man, as he couldn’t nail down a guaranteed starting berth. He just made six league appearances in total in his maiden campaign. Not at all promising signs, but what came next, was a masterstroke by Brendan Rodgers.
Caglar Soyuncu’s breath of fresh air
Even though Leicester City made a lot of money through the sale of Maguire, Brendan Rodgers didn’t cash in for a replacement. He decided to give Soyuncu a chance, and it was a breath of fresh air for the Turkish man.
Along with Jonny Evans, Caglar Soyuncu has built a formidable partnership that has backed Leicester to have a great run in the league. They have conceded just 29 goals this season, which is the second-best in the league, behind champions Liverpool. Leicester is currently third in the league, and the former Freiburg man has a vital role in the run.
Soyuncu has improved drastically from his maiden campaign. He raised the standards of his overall game. Soyuncu is averaging 1.8 tackles in the Premier League, while the man he replaced is averaging 1.03 at Manchester United. He is an excellent passer of the ball as well, making 67.63 passes per game, boasting a success percentage of 89.45%. These stats are great, as it shows how well he has adapted to Brendan Rodgers’ system, which involved keeping hold of possession and dictating from the back.
With the European spot almost within the grabs, Leicester will be looking forward to an exciting season next time around. Finishing this season on a high note is the priority, but under Rodgers, Leicester look destined to greater things. The team he is building is something special, and Soyuncu is a vital cog in his plans. Rodgers will be hoping Soyuncu will be on a roll so that he can spearhead the Foxes into a new era.
We think the Foxes are on the rise, so is Caglar Soyuncu. If Leicester can keep hold of him for long, they’ll have a gem, which needs a little polishing at the moment.
